Buying high-quality olive oil


The choice of olive oil in supermarkets, online shops and delicatessen stores is enormous. This naturally leads to a difficulty in picking the right one. On the one hand, there is liquid gold from a wide variety of countries and olive fruits available. On the other hand, there are different grades and certifications existing. However, the quality varies enormously among this large selection. Accordingly, you should pay attention to various criteria when buying olive oil, to identify the high-quality oil.

Cheap olive oils are usually a blend of oliveoil across countries

Inexpensive extra virgin olive oil, which you can find in supermarkets and discount stores, usually consists of a blend of different olive oils of varying quality (usually) from different countries. The "right" mix is then used to achieve the European Union's limit value for the designation "extra virgin". Due to the enormous price increases of olive oil in recent years and the resulting price pressure, more and more blended oil is available on the market.
The problem here is that, on the one hand, there are quality fluctuations from batch to batch and consumer tests are of little value as not every batch is tested. On the other hand, you don't know exactly where these oils come from. Consequently, a massive lack of transparency.

The good news is that this is easy to recognise. This is because these "blended oils" with oil from several countries should be labelled "produced from olive oils from European Union countries". Our oil millers: where our high-quality olive oil comes from

We import our extra virgin olive oil directly from the oil miller. At the same time, we make sure that the oil miller either cultivates his own groves or only works with selected olive growers to the highest quality standards. It is important for us to know where the oil comes from and to ensure that the olives are not obtained from opaque sources.
In our range you will therefore only find high-quality olive oil for which not only the olive variety(ies) used are known, but also the origin, i.e. the country of origin, the growing region and the producer. We import the goods directly from our producers, with whom we maintain a lively dialogue. This allows us to offer transparency and guarantee the quality of the product. As a direct importer, we also have the opportunity to offer our customers goods at a favourable price, as there are no middlemen involved.

As a further quality criterion, in addition to the clear origin of our selection of olive oil, we pay attention to "clean" production. This includes the care of the olive groves through to the bottling of each individual bottle. Olive oils from controlled organic cultivation set clear standards for the entire production cycle. The history of the cooperative began in 1974 in the picturesque Sicilian town of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, in the north-west of Sicily. It was then that the Salamita brothers, founders of the cooperative, learnt about Rudolf Steiner's philosophy and, fascinated by his theories, changed their focus from organic to biodynamic. Since then, the co-operative (Società Cooperativa Salamita) has made a significant contribution to the development of the biodynamic movement in Sicily. The fascinating story of Peperita and Azienda Agricola Rita Salvadori began with Franco Salvadori's passion for olive growing and the production of first-class olive oil. This amazing heritage has been lovingly passed on to his daughters Rita and Romina. For more than three generations, the Salvadori family has been producing the highest quality extra virgin olive oil, always with respect for nature. However, the focus of the Azienda is on chilli peppers.
