Antipasti, mezes and tapas - a brief overview

While antipasti originated in Italy, similar concepts of starters and appetisers are also found in other Mediterranean countries such as Greece (meze/ mezedes/ mezes), Spain (tapas) and Turkey (mezze).

The concept of creative and extensive appetisers is closely linked to the Mediterranean food culture. These are intended to whet the appetite and prepare guests for the main course ahead. The variety of ingredients and creative preparation make antipasti, mezes and tapas an important part of Mediterranean food culture and contribute to sociability and enjoyment at shared meals.

Antipasti are usually a combination of various cold or hot dishes, such as pickled vegetables or mushrooms, ham, cheese, olives, seafood, bruschetta and other delicacies. This is usually accompanied by wine or an aperitif (Aperol Spritz, Campari Spritz, etc.).

Mezedes, known in Greece as appetisers, often present themselves as a diverse selection of small dishes prepared with varied ingredients and perfectly paired with a glass of wine, ouzo or tsipouro. These delicious specialities are served in compact portions and consist mainly of a combination of fish, vegetables and cheese.
