Behind Greek Mountain Tea is not a tea blend, but a single herb called Sideritis (the Greek verbena). Greek verbena (Sideritis scardica) is a perennial plant that can grow up to 50 cm tall. The mountain tea grows in the high altitudes of the Mittelmmer region above the tree line. It is harvested shortly before the flowering period and only the upper shoots are collected by hand. These are then dried in the air.
The use of sideritis plants for the preparation of tea and tinctures has a long history in Greece. Already in ancient times, several thousand years ago, these plants were valued by the ancient Greeks for their health benefits. Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician, is said to have recommended tea for the treatment of various ailments.
The traditional Greek way: Add 2-3 heaped tablespoons of mountain tea herbs to 1 litre of water. Cover and simmer the tea for 10 minutes in slightly bubbling water. Then strain. The herbs can be boiled once or twice with a little less water.
