AGATHON Mount Athos - Organic Wine from Greece

Among the three high quality red wines of Tsantali, the Agathon most closely embodies an international style, certainly favoured by the barrique ageing and the proportion of Cabernet. This, together with the exciting monastery history in the background, makes it particularly popular and really successful.

The grapes for Agathon wine are produced in cooperation with the monks on Mount Athos. The few remaining monks can no longer maintain the ancient crops. With Tsantali's support, ancient vineyards and olive groves, some of which are thousands of years old, are now being carefully recultivated.

The monastic history of Mount Athos

Southeast of Thessaloniki lies the picturesque peninsula of Halkidiki, which attracts tourists with its enchanting landscapes, picturesque bays and clear waters. The region is rich in history and is home to numerous historical sites. One of them is the autonomous Monk's Republic, which surrounds the holy mountain of the same name, Mount Athos (2000 metres high). The Monk's Republic consists of 20 major monasteries. These monasteries, including one Serbian, one Russian, one Bulgarian and 17 Greek monasteries, are an important part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Over 1,000 years ago, Orthodox monks settled around Mount Athos and built monasteries. In their heyday in the 15th century, the Athos monasteries housed up to 40,000 monks. Today, just over 2,000 monks live in the midst of nature and follow a strict regime. They devote themselves to agriculture, including wine growing, and engage in activities such as wood carving, candle making, weaving, painting and calligraphy. Access to this region has been permitted since the 11th century.
